Papermaking

Paper is one of the oldest design materials in the world. I wanted to understand it from the beginning.

My final logbook

The logbook I created to document the process became its own project. I went into the printmaking room, hand-set individual letterpress type, rolled ink, and manually printed the cover and end pages on the press. Then, I taught myself Japanese bookbinding and stitched the whole thing together by hand with a needle and thread.

It is the kind of object that only exists because someone slowed down enough to make it.

Paper Organizing Process

In the fall of 2025 I took a hands-on papermaking workshop at Syracuse University, learning both eastern and western traditions of making paper. This includes:

  • pulling sheets with a mold and deckle

  • cooking and beating Kozo and Gampi bark fibers by hand

  • developing my own experimental paper formulas using materials I gathered and repurposed myself

    • Used coffee grounds

    • dried tea leaves

    • pressed flowers

    • recycled packaging

    • wax shavings
